Eat with Cal — Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 1, 2026. Eat with Cal (the “app”, “we”, “us”) is operated by WESTWOOD HILLS, K.K. (株式会社Westwood Hills), Japan — www.westwoodhills.jp. This policy explains what the app collects, why, and the choices you have. It reflects how the app actually works today.

Eat with Cal helps adults make everyday food decisions and track progress toward a weight goal. It is a general wellness and informational tool. It is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

Who can use Eat with Cal

Eat with Cal is intended for adults aged 18 and older. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

What we collect and why

You can start using Eat with Cal without creating an account. In that case we create an anonymous identifier so your data stays on your device’s session; you can create an account later to save and sync it.

  • Account information — if you create an account, your email address and a password. Why: to sign you in and keep your data across devices. Passwords are stored in hashed form by our authentication provider; we never see your plain-text password.
  • Profile and goal information — the details you enter during setup: date of birth, sex, height, activity level, your starting and goal weight, and target date. Why: to calculate your personalized daily calorie target and show your progress.
  • Weight entries — weights you log over time. Why: to show your trend toward your goal.
  • Food and meal logs — the foods and meals you choose to log, with the time and your local date. Why: to keep your food diary and daily totals.
  • Food photos — when you take or choose a photo to identify food or read a menu, the image is sent for AI analysis and then discarded. We do not store your photos.
  • Food corrections — if you correct an item the AI identified, we save the correction (for example, the original and corrected food name and calorie estimate). Why: to make the estimate you see more accurate. These corrections are not used to train AI models unless separately and explicitly permitted; by default they are not.
  • Usage counts — a per-day count of how many AI analyses you run. Why: to prevent abuse and manage capacity. This count contains no food content.
  • Approximate location — only when you ask to find nearby options. Your location is coarsened on your device before any nearby search is made, is used only to return nearby restaurants, and is never stored by us.
  • Subscription status — whether you have an active Eat with Cal subscription. Why: to unlock premium features. Purchases and payments are handled entirely by Apple (App Store); we never receive your payment card or billing details.
  • Product analytics — events about how the app is used, such as screens opened, a food decision being shown, the subscription screen being viewed and a purchase being started or completed (with the plan chosen), plus basic app and device information (app version and platform). These events are linked to your account's random identifier, not to your name or email, and they never include your food photos, what you eat, your weight or your location. Why: to understand which features help people and to improve the app.
  • How you found us — if you choose to answer “How did you find Eat with Cal?” (for example TikTok or App Store search) or enter a creator code, we store that answer with your product analytics. The question is optional. Why: to know which channels and creators actually help people.
  • Ad measurement — the app uses Meta's SDK to report app installs and a few in-app events (such as opening the app, finishing onboarding, viewing the subscription screen, starting a checkout and completing a purchase) so we can measure our own ads on Meta. It does not collect your device's advertising identifier, and we do not track you across other companies' apps.
  • Crash and error reports — if the app crashes or hits an error, a report is sent to our crash-reporting provider, Sentry (United States). It contains the error type and technical details of the error, your device model and operating system version, the app version, and your account's random identifier. We set up the app to keep your name, email, food photos, food logs, weight and device location out of these reports, and we filter them before sending. Sentry may also record the network (IP) address the report was sent from, and can infer approximate location from it. Why: to find and fix bugs.

We do not sell your personal information. We use the limited app-event data described above only to measure our own ads; we do not use your data to show you other companies' ads.

Launch notifications

If you enter your email on our website to be notified about the Eat with Cal launch, we store that email solely to send you one message when the app is available. We do not use it for other marketing. You can ask us to delete it anytime at info@westwoodhills.jp.

How food photos and AI work

When you use a photo or menu feature, the image or text is sent securely to our AI provider, Anthropic, which analyzes it and returns a result. We send only the image or text and our instructions for the task — we do not send your name or email to the AI provider. The image is used to produce your result and is then discarded; we do not keep it.

Where your data is stored (international processing)

We operate from Japan and serve users first in the United States. Your account and app data are stored using Supabase, our backend provider, in its Seoul, South Korea region. AI analysis is performed by Anthropic in the United States. Crash and error reports are processed by Sentry in the United States. Other providers (Apple, Google) operate globally. By using the app you understand your information may be processed in these locations.

Service providers we use

  • Supabase — hosting, authentication, and database (stores your account and app data).
  • Anthropic — AI analysis of food photos and menu text (transient; images are not retained by us).
  • Google — the Places service, used only to find nearby restaurants from your coarsened location.
  • Apple — App Store subscriptions and payments.
  • PostHog — product analytics (United States).
  • Meta — app install and in-app event measurement for our own ads.
  • Sentry — crash and error reporting (United States).

We share personal information with these providers only to run the features described above, under their terms.

Data retention and deletion

We keep your account, profile, goal, weight, and food-log data for as long as your account exists, so your diary and progress remain available to you.

You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time from within the app (Home → Delete account). Deletion removes your account and cascades to your profile, goals, weight entries, food logs, corrections, and usage records. This cannot be undone. Photos are never stored, so there is nothing to delete there. Crash reports are kept by Sentry for a limited time and are not removed when you delete your account.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit. Access to your data is restricted by per-user database access rules, and provider keys for AI and location are held only on our servers, never in the app. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal information, and to withdraw consent. You can access and correct most information directly in the app, and you can delete everything using Delete account. For any other request, contact us using the details below.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. We will change the “Last updated” date above and, for material changes, provide notice in the app or on our website.
